La Paz, Bolivia: Unveiling the Mystique of the World's Highest Capital | Indian Travel Couple
La Paz was our first destination in Bolivia and it raised our interest to explore the rest of the country.
In this video, we explore La Paz, the administrative capital of Bolivia. The city, at more than ~3,600m/ 12,000 feet altitude, situated in the Altiplano region of Bolivia, is a cultural melting pot.
As we navigate the markets and streets of La Paz Centro, we learn about the mix of indigenous and Spanish culture and the interesting rituals. The Witches' Market and the Churches indicate the co-existence of cultural unity over centuries.
The colorful streets of Centro, Linares Street also known as Umbrella Street, the historically important Jaen Street with the nicely-preserved colonial architecture and museums, the local market, street food, and meals at Mercado Lanza allowed us to ...

Founded in 1548 as Nuestra Señora de La Paz (“Our Lady of Peace”) by the conquistador Captain Alonso de Mendoza on the site of an Inca village, the city was renamed La Paz de Ayacucho in 1825, in commemoration of the last decisive battle in the wars of independence.
Mi Teleférico in Spanish which means My Cable Car, also known as Teleférico La Paz–El Alto (La Paz–El Alto Cable Car), is an aerial cable car urban transit system serving the La Paz–El Alto metropolitan area in Bolivia.[6]The Mi Teleférico system consists of monocable aerial cable car lines. Most lines have a maximum capacity of 3000 passengers per hour, while the Sky Blue Line has a capacity of 4000 passengers per hour. Each car seats 10 passengers. Cable Cars depart every 12 seconds, and the network is open 17 hours a day. There are many stations along the ten lines which are designated by color code: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Orange, White, Sky Blue, Purple, Brown, and Silver. Each of the cabins going to different destinations by different lines are seen in these colors.
In 2018, Mi Teleférico won a Latam Smart City Award in the category of "Sustainable urban development and mobility. Mi Teleférico was planned in order to address a number of problems, including a precarious public transit system that could not cope with growing user demands, the high cost in time and money of traveling between La Paz and El Alto, chaotic traffic with its subsequent environmental and noise pollution, and a growing demand for gasoline and diesel fuel, which are subsidized by the state.
The Cable Car in La Paz is a unique experience. It is cheap, easy to navigate and simple to get tickets. Such an efficient way to traverse the city of La Paz! Convenient and very affordable. Clean, organized, efficient. The various views over the city is amazing and using several different lines gives you a really good understanding of just how big and incredible La Paz is! Different lines take you right up from the city in the valley to the mountainside above. A wonderful, modern, clean and efficient way to see the cities of El Alto and La Paz. Be sure to travel several different lines as they each have a unique beauty of its own. They all offer an interesting view of the city.
This is a lovely way to spend your first day in La Paz as your body gets acclimatized and adjusted to the altitude. We travelled many lines and made a full loop that brought us back almost to the line where we began and the hotel. It’s amazing to see how these telefericos are just the perfect mode of public transportation for the people here. A must do for visitors! Traveling across La Paz by cable car puts you high above the sky, with panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, hillside neighborhoods, colorful streets and downtown,.one of the best way to see this offbeat colorful city is in the sky. explore the exuberant and colorful el alto also known as cholets.
La Paz is also an important cultural center of Latin America and is considered a global city type "Gamma" by Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC). La Paz, an administrative capital of Bolivia, in west-central Bolivia, is situated some 42 miles (68 km) southeast of Lake Titicaca. It was Bolivia’s most populous city until the turn of the 21st century, when it was overtaken by Santa Cruz.
Rich with 19th cntury churches, museums of artifacts from the pre-Conquest era, precarious overlooks, and colorful markets, La Paz is truly unique. The Witches’ Market, in the center of the city, sells charms and potions for Aymara rituals, as well as souvenirs. There are amazing spots where one Can't-miss to dine, drink, and feast. La Paz does have a reputation for having some of the best nightlife in the world.
Due to its location at whoppingly high altitude, Visitors, upon arrival, often find exertion difficult because of the rarefied atmosphere at those elevations. Come prepared but not afraid. The centre of the city lies in a deep, broad canyon formed by the La Paz, or Choqueyapu, River. The city’s location, about 1,400 feet (430 metres) below the surface of the Altiplano, the high intermontane plateau, affords some protection from the cold winds of the highlands. Population growth since the latter part of the 20th century has expanded the city up the canyon walls to the edge of the Altiplano.

On a recent, cold morning in May, Doctor Carlos Ortuño hopped in a tiny electric car to check on a patient on the outskirts of Bolivia's capital of La Paz, unsure if the small vehicle would be able to handle the steep, winding streets of this city located at 3,650 meters (11,900 feet) above sea level.
Ortuño's home visit aboard a car the size of a golf cart is part of a government-sponsored program that brings doctors to patients living in neighbourhoods far from the city centre.
Known as "Médico en tu casa," the program was launched late last month by the municipality of La Paz using a fleet of six EVs manufactured by Quantum Motors, the country's sole producer of electric cars.
The program could also help boost Quantum Motors; a company launched four years ago by entrepreneurs who believe EVs will transform the auto industry in Bolivia, a lithium-rich country where cheap, subsidized imported gasoline is still the norm.
Built like a box, the Quantum moves at no more than 35mph, can be recharged from a household outlet and can travel 50 miles (80 km) before a recharge.
Its creators hope the $7,600 car will help revive dreams of a lithium-powered economy and make electric vehicles something the masses will embrace.

The colorful streets of Centro, Linares Street also known as Umbrella Street, the historically important Jaen Street with the nicely-preserved colonial architecture and museums, the local market, street food, and meals at Mercado Lanza allowed us to experience La Paz culture, history and food.
We explored the Cable Cars or the Teleferico, the aerial public transport system that takes you to the faraway corners of La Paz and El Alto with amazing views of the city below and the snow-capped mountains surrounding the city.
We got an aerial view of the largest market in Bolivia, Mercado 16 de Julio, and various "cholets" in El Alto. We explored El Alto on foot as well, seeing the "cholets" with their interesting designs that stand out among the red-brick houses.
